The Lowdown on Lisbon
I read Jerry Haines’ delightfully informative article (“Celebrating Lisbon’s Sweet, Sad Soul,” April 28) a few days before we left for Lisbon. The city was wonderful, much nicer than I expected.
We went to eat and hear fado at the Adega do Ribatejo, recommended in the article. When the bill came, each item was charged at several euros more than was listed on the menu. We didn’t have this problem at any other place in Portugal.
Also, we learned quickly that the many appetizers that are brought to the table at most restaurants are neither on the house nor included with the price of the meal.
While I enjoyed every place we went in southern Portugal, my favorite was the charming village of Monsaraz, which is worth a visit.
