Kariya Would Like to Change Some Rules
A gold medal isn’t the only thing Mighty Duck captain Paul Kariya brought back from the Olympics. A few ideas to improve the quality of games in the NHL came with him.
Kariya would like to see the NHL adopt some of the international rules that were used during the Olympics, including the elimination of the red line and enforcing a five-second rule on faceoffs.
“I would love to see the no red line, some way of opening up our neutral zone,” Kariya said. “There is so much more room there [in the Olympics] to operate and create offense. The speed of the game is something everyone enjoyed there. The games lasted less than two hours sometimes.”
Kariya, citing the drop in goals around the league, has long been a proponent of moving the goal lines back. “You create offense where there’s room,” he said.
