Constant Activity Can Make Old Calf Pain Worse

Question: I’m 44 and in good shape. I have had this feeling of dull muscle strain in my mid- to lower-right calf for approximately two years. I have taken great strides to reduce any strain on the area and have still been able to run without too much discomfort. However, while running this past week, I did a lot of stretches before my run, and I think I pulled a muscle in that same calf.

Since then, I’ve been stretching and taking ibuprofen. Any suggestions on what else to do?

Answer: You should definitely see a doctor and physical therapist for your muscle strain. Two years is too long to experience the same complications in your calf. By continuing to do physical activities and stressing that area, you could end up with a more serious injury, such as a muscle or tendon tear.

Keep in mind that stretching is a great preventive measure (when done regularly), but with a case of tendinitis or some other overuse injury similar to yours, too much stretching can prolong rather than speed recovery. If it’s OK with your doctor and physical therapist, try a deep-muscle massage in the muscle group immediately above or below the calf area. Additionally, do consistent range-of-motion, stability and strength exercises for your legs and ankles.

Apply ice post activity and apply heat when resting.
