Grove Theater’s Schedule Showcases Comedy
“Comedy tonight” seems to be the motto at the Grove Theater Center, where humorous plays will outnumber drama 4 to 1 in the spring-summer season.
“Sylvia,” A.R. Gurney’s popular comedy about what happens to a happily married New York City couple after they take in a stray dog, runs March 22-April 13. John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” the only drama, runs April 24-May 11. The Troubadour Theater Company, which specializes in spoofing Shakespeare plays, offers “All’s Kool That Ends Kool,” June 14-15. Larry Shue’s comedy, “The Foreigner,” plays July 11-27, and “All’s Well That Ends Well” will be the center’s annual Shakespearean production, Aug. 7-24.
All shows except “All’s Kool That Ends Kool” will be staged in the indoor Gem Theater.
Renovations to the stage shell of the adjacent Festival Amphitheater will force the Grove to forgo its usual al fresco summer offerings, said executive director Charles Johanson.
Outdoor theater buffs should note that all four comedies on the Grove schedule also will be staged outdoors at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, Johanson said, with dates to be announced. Information: (714) 741-9555.
