Canine Consideration Breeds Good Behavior

I completely agree with “It’s the Owners as Much as the Dogs That Need Training” (Commentary, March 22), about owners having to take responsibility for their dogs’ behavior. However, this is not only for the so-called aggressive dogs--but all dogs, regardless of breed or temperament.

A growl is a warning, but doesn’t necessarily mean a dog will bite. Any dog who is mistreated, neglected or even unintentionally abused may have a breaking point. Since most dog bites in this country are directed at children, parents bear a particular responsibility to teach their children to be kind and respectful toward their pets; they are living creatures who feel pain and will react, if tested. Positive training is imperative for the dog and the owner.
