GOP to Air Infomercial in Spanish
In its latest effort to woo Latino voters, the Republican Party is taking to the Spanish-language airwaves with a 30-minute infomercial set to run in six cities nationwide, including Fresno.
The project, dubbed Abriendo Caminos, or Forging New Paths, will contain a mix of news headlines and issue-oriented discussion produced at Republican national headquarters in Washington. The monthly program will air as paid advertising on the Telemundo and Univision networks.
Over the last few years, Latinos have become an increasingly fought-over segment of the electorate as their population grows in number and expands beyond a handful of states. President Bush has been particularly aggressive, hoping to improve upon the 38% of the Latino vote he won in 2000.
The political TV show will start out in six cities: Albuquerque, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Fresno and Orlando, Fla. Party Chairman Marc Racicot has scheduled a news conference today in Washington to launch the outreach initiative.
