TURNING POINTS

There were two important moments. Corey Koskie’s double in the fifth inning gave the Twins a 2-1 lead. However, in the second inning, Kevin Appier threw a wild pitch, allowing Torii Hunter to advance to third. Hunter then scored on a sacrifice fly. If not for the wild pitch, it’s a 1-1 game.

After scoring 31 runs in four games against the Yankees, the Angels could manage only one run against the Twins, and they wouldn’t have scored that if not for Cristian Guzman’s error. Maybe they spent too much time celebrating their division series win, and not enough time preparing for Minnesota.

After Guzman’s error allowed a run to score, Twin pitcher Joe Mays made a point of going over to Guzman between innings to reassure the young shortstop and keep his confidence up. This was in sharp contrast to the Yankees, who got mad at each other after errors throughout the division series.

A big warning sign should be flashing for the Angels right now. Throughout his career, a sure way to tell when Troy Glaus is in a hitting slump is if he takes a lot of called third strikes. He took two called third strikes Tuesday, one with the tying run on base in the ninth inning.
