Explosions and gunfire shook Daloa, a rebel-held city in a key cocoa region of Ivory Coast, unsettling world markets for the product. West African mediators pushed for a truce to end the nearly monthlong conflict.
Hundreds have died in the fighting. The war and the ethnic violence it is unleashing have caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, creating a tide of refugees that aid workers fear could spill over Ivorian borders, destabilizing other West African countries.
