West Coast debut of ‘Grill’

“The Spitfire Grill” is about a female ex-con’s search for balm in Gilead--the biblical name of the tiny Wisconsin town in which the musical is set. Composer James Valcq and his lyricist partner, the late Fred Alley, based the show on a 1996 film in which a rootless heroine hires on at the only eatery in town and faces suspicious locals. This is the West Coast premiere.

“The Spitfire Grill,” Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. Previews Thursday and Friday; regular performances begin Sunday. Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 and 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 and 7 p.m. Ends Dec. 1. $42-$49. (949) 497-2787.
