0 Plays on offense for Manhattan Beach Mira Costa standout running back Michael Okwo, who, because he had a sore hip, played only linebacker in the Mustangs’ 56-28 season-opening victory over North Torrance. Okwo also had an upset stomach before the game.

2-0 Score by which Arcadia defeated La Canada St. Francis, ending a six-game losing streak against the Golden Knights. A snap over the head of St. Francis punter Travis Berg sailed through the back of the end zone for the game’s only points.

6 Touchdowns scored by South Torrance running back Chauncey Washington in the Spartans’ 56-39 loss to West Torrance. Washington finished with 272 yards in 26 carries in a game that also featured a 236-yard, four-touchdown performance by the Warriors’ Tom Cleveland.

35 Yards from which Newhall Hart kicked the extra point with no time remaining in its 21-21 tie with Los Alamitos. Indian players had stormed the field after a last-second touchdown completion, drawing an excessive celebration penalty.

BIG WINNERS

* A large measure of respect was gained by Orange Lutheran, which fell one two-point conversion short of knocking off Santa Ana Mater Dei. The Division VI Lancers lost to the Division I Monarchs, 21-20, in what nearly was one of the biggest upsets in Orange County history. They will get another shot at a Division I team Thursday when they play Anaheim Servite.

* Matt Engle of El Segundo returned from a viral infection that had sidelined him in practice all week to throw five touchdown passes in the Eagles’ 42-14 victory over San Pedro Mary Star.

* Ryan Neinhuis of Santa Margarita stripped the ball from Orange El Modena running back Daniel Dixon with less than two minutes remaining to help preserve the Eagles’ 17-10 victory. Dixon was inside the Eagle 30-yard line when he lost the ball.

* Carson scored a big victory for the City Section when it defeated Long Beach Jordan, 32-22, in an early-season intersectional showdown. It was the second year in a row that the Colts beat the Panthers by 10 points in an opener.

UPSETS

* San Clemente defeated then-No. 5 Huntington Beach Edison, 13-10. As good as he is, Charger quarterback Tommy Grady is effective only when he has time to throw the ball. That didn’t happen Friday, when the Tritons sacked him seven times.

* Alta Loma defeated then-No. 16 Covina Charter Oak, 35-31. The Braves capitalized on the Chargers’ four second-half turnovers, completing the victory when Greg Holt ran one yard for a touchdown with less than two minutes to play.

* La Puente Bishop Amat defeated then-No. 19 Valencia, 17-14. Christopher Seals scored on a four-yard run with just over a minute to go, lifting the Lancers.
