Rapist Gets 33 Years to Life in Prison
A judge on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old man to 33 years to life in state prison for raping a woman whom he had threatened with a samurai sword.
Wilbert Ward McCoy of Los Angeles was convicted last November of nine felony counts including rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by a foreign object. His fingerprints were found on the sword.
Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson pronounced sentence.
The Dec. 13, 2000, attack occurred in an underground parking lot in Koreatown.
The victim, who was 18 at the time, said she had been grabbed from behind and had never seen her assailant’s face.
McCoy’s DNA linked him to the attack.
McCoy, a pre-med junior at USC at the time, said he had been in his apartment studying for finals. He said that his backpack, found near the crime scene, had been stolen a month before.
