Foreigners Evacuated From Rebel-Held City
U.S. and French troops in helicopters swooped into the rebel-held northern Ivory Coast city of Korhogo to evacuate about 400 foreigners, including nuns, Peace Corps workers and orphans clutching stuffed rabbits.
West African leaders meeting in Ghana promised to try to persuade the rebels to lay down their arms but said that, in the meantime, they would put their military forces on standby. The rebels have battled Ivorian troops since a Sept. 19 coup attempt.
French and U.S. KC-130 military cargo planes ferried the rescued civilians, including 55 Americans, to an airfield in Yamoussoukro, the capital.
