Caroline Newhouse, 93; Mogul’s Widow, Patron of the Arts
Caroline Newhouse, 93, the widow of one of the founders of the Newhouse communications dynasty and a prominent figure in New York cultural circles, died Saturday at her home in Roxbury, Conn., after suffering a heart attack.
The widow of Theodore Newhouse, she served on the boards of New York City Opera and Career Transition for Dancers, an organization that she and her husband founded to help retired performers find new careers.
An artist and sculptor, Caroline Newhouse was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States with her widowed mother in 1934.
She married Theodore Newhouse, one of three brothers who founded the Newhouse communications company in 1956. The couple maintained homes in New York City and Roxbury, where she had an artist’s studio. Theodore Newhouse died in 1998.
