Choose Representatives Over Politicians

Regarding term limits (letters, April 24): Will Rogers was right when he said people have short memories. I am always amazed how people have forgotten that we had a part-time Legislature and it was one of the best in the country. And it was not that long ago. The voters voted for a full-time Legislature with all the perks of a full salary, retirement benefits, etc., then compounded it by voting in term limits, creating politicians -- instead of representatives -- who spend all their time raising money to get reelected. So it’s time to go back to a part-time Legislature.

A politician’s career should not be determined by term limits but instead by “bill limits.” Under this plan, we the people would get rid of overzealous politicians who continually burden the citizenry by limiting each one to submitting no more than two bills during his or her elected term of office. If one should attempt to submit a third bill that is either frivolous or burdensome, he or she will have to resign immediately. Three strikes and they’re out!

Re “With County in Turmoil, 4 Supervisors Off to Cuba,” April 28: I think the real reason the Los Angeles County supervisors went to Cuba was to learn Fidel Castro’s secret for staying in office 44 years!
