Scholarship has Rogers’ name
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has established a $10,000 annual scholarship in the name of Fred Rogers to help college students following in his footsteps through the study of children’s media and childhood education.
The scholarship was unveiled Tuesday night by academy Chairman Dick Askin during a tribute to the late host of PBS’ “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.” Rogers died in February.
Rogers’ widow, Joanne, said the announcement was a pleasant surprise. “Fred would really have liked that,” she told the audience at the academy’s headquarters in North Hollywood, “so that talented students will be given a start toward children’s television.”
