The U.S. as Occupier
Re “Best-Laid Plans of Occupiers,” Opinion, Dec. 21: Amy Wilentz did state that the reason for the failure in Haiti was that President Clinton pulled out before the job was done. He pulled out as soon as the going got a little tough. President Bush says we will “stay the course in Iraq.”
Wilentz also stated, “Occupation and democracy can’t coexist, and the one never engenders the other.” She does not know her history. After World War II, we occupied Germany and Japan for about four and seven years, respectively. Both are now democracies.
