Maybe USC Can Win Myth America Title

If the Rose Bowl is the “true” national title game that The Times insists it is, then does Michigan win the national championship if it defeats USC? Didn’t think so. It is nothing more or less than another mythical championship decided only by sportswriters.

Say what you want about the BCS, it is less biased than the AP and coaches’ polls; the same polls (coaches) that arbitrarily elevated Nebraska over No. 1 Michigan in 1997, though both had won bowl games, and chose Alabama (AP) over a USC team (UPI coaches) that had defeated Alabama during the season.

Bernard Parks, please leave discussion of the BCS mess to the fans and the media. Stop wasting the people’s hard-earned tax dollars talking and filing motions about college football when there are far more important issues to be dealt with.

Bill Plaschke’s column on USC wide receiver Mike Williams and his white Florida family was a deeply touching story; perfect for Christmas day.

Our daughter-in-law, visiting from Virginia, with our son and their two daughters, started to read it, but finally had to stop. She couldn’t read it through her tears.

If it doesn’t make the annual collection of “Best Sports Writing” for 2003, then the anthology will be bogus.
