Protecting the Rights of All Those With Disabilities
Re “Ruling Is a Boon for State’s Disabled Workers,” Feb. 21:
Hooray for California! The recent California Supreme Court decision to clarify that anyone suffering from a physical or mental limitation is protected from discrimination is the first good news in the war to protect disability civil rights in quite a while.
This decision will help anyone with a disability to fight discrimination -- not just those with a substantial disability.
Too often employers will use a physical or mental limitation that could be easily accommodated to get rid of someone who is viewed as being costly because of a bad back, diabetes or other problems not even related to his or her disability. The goal here is to put people to work in jobs that they can perform and not throw them away at the first sign of a challenge.
As California’s population ages, this is an important protection.
