Leak Gets the East Rolling in Rout

Chris Leak threw three touchdown passes and the East defense had four interceptions in the first half of a 47-3 victory over the West in the U.S. Army All-American game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Leak, who was selected the most valuable player after throwing for 164 yards on seven-for-12 passing in less than three quarters, connected with Andre Caldwell for a 78-yard touchdown play in the first quarter.

Leak threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Adarius Bowman in the second quarter and one of 13 yards to Jayson Swain in the third quarter.

Swain had a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. The three East quarterbacks had at least one touchdown pass.

Ryan Mundy had two of the interceptions for the East, which led, 19-3, at halftime, and 40-3 after three quarters.

The West, which included 12 Californians, prevented a first-half blowout when Quintin Daniels of Los Angeles Loyola intercepted a pass in the end zone with less than a minute left.

Another bright spot for the West was Reggie Bush of La Mesa Helix, the No. 1 running back recruit on the West Coast.

Bush, who had 4,925 yards rushing in three varsity seasons, had 48 yards in nine carries. He announced during the game that he has committed to USC.

Leak, who committed to Florida at halftime, finished his career with 15,593 yards passing, 185 touchdowns and 16,662 yards.

The 185 touchdown passes set a national record, breaking the mark of 170 by Rhett Lashlee of Shiloh Christian in Springdale, Ark., from 1998 to 2001.

Pico Rivera Mesrobian won its second CIF-Scholastic State Championship when its girls’ volleyball team earned a collective 3.93 grade-point average this season.

The Bulldogs also won the girls’ basketball title in the winter of 2001.

Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World won its first title in boys’ cross-country with a collective GPA of 3.79.

The Fighting Scots finished runner-up to Valley Center, from the San Diego Section, in girls’ cross-country, 3.93 to 3.86.

The 2002-03 Interscholastic Equestrian League season continues Saturday and Sunday at The Oaks/Blenheim in San Juan Capistrano.

More than 150 riders representing more than 50 schools, from Palos Verdes in the north to San Clemente in the south, compete at the novice, freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels in English or Western style.
