As expected, the Lakers announced Wednesday that their new radio announcing team will be Joel Meyers and Mychal Thompson.

A radio industry source said both signed three-year contracts.

Meyers has been the television play-by-play voice of the San Antonio Spurs the last four seasons. He is currently with the Spurs doing a cable post-game show during the NBA Finals.

Meyers and his family live in the San Fernando Valley. He has one son in college and another in high school and he said being able to spend more time with them was a key factor in pursuing the Laker job.

“It’s a dream and an honor to be able to join the Laker organization,” he said from East Rutherford, N.J.

Meyers, a veteran of more than 20 years in broadcasting, will continue announcing Sunday night NFL games for Westwood One radio and Big 12 football games for Fox Sports Net. Whenever he misses a Laker game, his likely fill-in will be Larry Burnett, who works for Laker flagship station KLAC (570).

Thompson, who played on Laker championship teams in 1987 and ‘88, last week signed a three-year contract with XTRA (690, 1150) as an afternoon sports talk-show host. XTRA is a sister station of KLAC.

The television announcing team for the Lakers will be Paul Sunderland and Stu Lantz. Lantz has signed a new two-year contract, and Sunderland is expected to sign a new deal any day.
