Marlins’ Olsen Is Out of Hospital

Florida Marlin pitcher Kevin Olsen was released Saturday from a Boston hospital and put on the 15-day disabled list because of a concussion, one day after being hit in the head by a line drive.

“He probably won’t be able to pitch for a couple of weeks,” Manager Jack McKeon said.

Olsen needed six stitches for a cut that opened when he was struck near the right ear by a seventh-inning line drive by Todd Walker of the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander was nearly motionless on the mound for nine minutes, moving his legs and blinking his eyes before being immobilized and carted off the field on a stretcher.

The New York Mets optioned outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo to triple-A Norfolk and recalled outfielder Raul Gonzalez between games of a day-night doubleheader against the New York Yankees.

Shinjo was batting only .193 with one home run and seven runs batted in.

“I know what I have to do down there,” Shinjo said in a statement read by an interpreter. “I will do my best to get the results, and I’ll be back.”

Met interim General Manager Jim Duquette said the move was made primarily to give Timo Perez an opportunity to play center field regularly.

Cleveland right-hander Jason Phillips was acquired by the Orix BlueWave of Japan’s Pacific League, Orix officials said.

Phillips pitched only five innings in three games this year for Cleveland and had a 9.00 earned-run average. In three years in the major leagues with the Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates, Phillips was 1-4 with a 6.20 ERA.
