Mauritania’s top opposition leader was arrested and accused of being part of a plot to overthrow the U.S.-allied president of the North African nation.

State security agents arrested Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidalla at his headquarters in the capital, a senior official of his party said. It was the second arrest in four days for Haidalla, an ex-dictator who tried to win back power in voting Friday, 19 years after President Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya overthrew him. He was detained Thursday for five hours.

Haidalla has disputed election results that gave him 19% of the vote and Taya 67%.
