Mater Dei Holds Off Edison, 6-0

Neither coach wanted to see Thursday’s game between Santa Ana Mater Dei and Huntington Beach Edison end the way it did.

The Monarchs, ranked No. 25 in the Southland by The Times, stopped Edison running back Joshua Gage inside the one-yard line just before time expired and then watched the final seconds tick off to preserve their 6-0 victory at Santa Ana Stadium.

Afterward, Coach Dave White of No. 15 Edison was livid because his team did not get to call its final timeout after the play, even though White said he gave the head referee instructions to immediately use it if Gage did not score. “He didn’t give it to us,” White said. “That’s just cheating the kids.”

Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson, who was trying to keep the Monarchs from beginning the season 0-4 for the first time since 1951, also sensed that the game ended prematurely.

“If I’m Dave White, I’m saying, ‘Why didn’t we get one more play?’ ” Rollinson said.

Edison (3-1) moved into position to win after the Monarchs scored the game’s only points on Justin Guzman’s 11-yard run with just over five minutes remaining.

But the Monarchs mishandled the extra-point attempt.

The Chargers were awarded the ball inside the two after a pass interference penalty in the end zone with seven seconds left.

Gage then barreled over the right side, but was tackled short of the goal with about two seconds left.

Edison had a chance to score earlier in the fourth quarter after moving the ball to the Mater Dei one, but running back Abel Cardona fumbled at the goal line and Mater Dei’s Andrew Simmons recovered at the one.

Newhall Hart 45, Lake Balboa Birmingham 22 -- Quarterback Sean Norton threw for a career-high 396 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 9 Indians shook off three close losses to notch their first win of the season at College of the Canyons.

Hart (1-3) opened the season with losses to No. 1 Los Alamitos, No. 7 Ventura St. Bonaventure and No. 6 Westlake Village Westlake. Norton made sure there wouldn’t be a fourth against the defending City Section champions as he completed 21 of 28 passes and ran for a touchdown.

Evan Surratt caught seven passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns while Kevin Ciccone caught seven passes for 121 yards and a score. Surratt’s 30-yard scoring grab gave the Indians a 31-14 lead.

Los Alamitos 37, La Habra 7 -- Quarterback Jimmy Barnes had a breakout game in his fourth start and No. 1 Los Alamitos dominated the nonleague game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Barnes, a junior, completed 28 of 46 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.

In three previous games, Barnes had completed 36 of 66 passes for 580 yards. The victory was a statement for Los Alamitos (4-0), the defending Division I champion, which narrowly defeated La Habra last year, 24-20.

Los Alamitos held La Habra (2-2) to 195 yards, forced four turnovers and sacked La Habra quarterback Daniel Morales seven times. La Habra’s lone score came on a 78-yard pass play from Morales to Trenton Sakioka that pulled La Habra to within 17-7 with 7:25 left in the second quarter. La Habra entered Los Alamitos territory only three times.
