NRA Solicitations Are Perfectly Legal
Re “NRA Pitch Angers 2 L.A. Officials,” Sept. 26: I am a Los Angeles Police Department officer and a life member of the National Rifle Assn., as are many of my fellow officers. I am amazed at the ignorance and intolerance of Councilman Jack Weiss and the alleged officer who notified the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The NRA provides a plethora of personal services for law enforcement personnel across the country, such as firearms training (marksmanship) specifically tailored to police needs and firearms safety, including firearms cleaning and maintenance education, as well as firearms insurance. The NRA assists smaller police agencies that do not have the budgets and resources of the LAPD.
To include a card or pamphlet offering membership to the NRA is no different than finding an offer to sign up with an Internet service provider when one buys a computer. No one is being forced to sign up. It is completely voluntary.
