2 Rivals Parry in ‘Ambush’

At the end of an uneventful 15-minute interview Friday with Arnold Schwarzenegger on “Armstrong and Getty” on Sacramento radio station KSTE-AM (650), hosts Jack Armstrong and Joe Getty brought state Sen. Tom McClintock into the studio, with Getty saying, “We have interviews back to back.”

Getty: “Have you met Tom McClintock?”

Schwarzenegger: “No.”

McClintock asks him: “Why don’t we get together and discuss the major issues of this campaign?”

Schwarzenegger replies: “I’m more than happy to get together with you anytime to discuss things.... I respect you.... I’m more than happy to get together with you anytime....”

McClintock: “Can we do that in a debate before the convention Saturday?”

Schwarzenegger, by now hemming and hawing: “No ... I’m more than happy....”

McClintock: “Don’t you think this is the best time?”

Schwarzenegger: “I would be more than happy to do that, so the people can see....”

McClintock: “But, Arnold, we’re both going to be there at the convention this weekend.”

McClintock pressed him a couple more times, with Schwarzenegger saying only that he would be willing to meet. Finally, the hosts let him go.

Armstrong and Getty later called their effort “an ambush.”

Burton Not Interested in Bustamante’s Job

Senate President Pro Tem John Burton (D-San Francisco) says he’s not interested in becoming lieutenant governor if voters recall Gov. Gray Davis and promote Cruz Bustamante to governor.

In a statement, the 70-year-old Burton said, “I am holding out for governor or nothing.”

He said he couldn’t imagine giving up leading the 40-member Senate for a role in which he would merely cast the tie-breaking vote if the Senate deadlocked.

She Wants to Keep Bars Open Till 4 A.M.

Recall candidate and porn star Mary Carey said that if elected governor she’d support legislation to allow bars in California to remain open until 4 a.m., like they do in New York and Miami.

“Think of all the extra revenue this will generate, not to mention the additional hours of employment for those who need it most, the working class of California,” the candidate said this week at Barfly, a West Hollywood nightspot.

Bars in California now must close by 2 a.m.
