Tigers Leave Dubious Record to the ’62 Mets

The Tigers avoided the 1962 New York Mets’ modern-day record for losses, finishing their best six-game stretch this season with a 9-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at Detroit.

Detroit (43-119) used a seven-run sixth inning to win for the fifth time in six games, leaving the notorious record to the Mets (40-120).

New York 3, Baltimore 1 -- David Wells earned his 200th career victory and was pulled in the eighth inning at New York by pitcher Roger Clemens, who made out the lineup and managed the team in place of Joe Torre.

Chicago 5, Kansas City 1 -- Esteban Loaiza took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Kansas City, Mo., and finished with eight strikeouts for a league-leading 207 and his 21st victory.

Toronto 6, Cleveland 2 -- Carlos Delgado hit a grand slam at Toronto and finished with a major league-leading 145 runs batted in to go with 42 homers.

Seattle 9, Oakland 3 -- Jamie Moyer (21-7) set a club record for victories and the Mariners completed a series sweep at Seattle.
