Driver Arrested in Crash Killing 1
A Newport Beach man was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter Sunday afternoon after his car jumped the median and slammed into oncoming traffic on Newport Boulevard, killing one person, police said.
Jon Yip, 30, told police he fell asleep in his sport utility vehicle just before noon Sunday while southbound on Newport Boulevard south of 17th Street, said police Cpl. Joe Poelstra.
The vehicle jumped the median and crossed into oncoming traffic. It clipped the rear of an SUV driven by a 30-year-old Las Vegas woman, then broadsided a convertible, authorities said.
The convertible’s driver, a 43-year-old Torrance man, died at the scene, Poelstra said. His name was not released pending notification of family.
