Sosa Gets Record, but the Reds Get the Win, 11-10
Sammy Sosa is the Cubs’ career home run leader. Greg Maddux is still looking for his first win since returning to Chicago.
Adam Dunn hit two homers, and Juan Castro had a two-run triple in the 10th inning that sent the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-10 victory over the Cubs on Sunday, another wild and wacky day at Wrigley Field.
“It was windy, no question,” Maddux said. “It was tough. It was probably tougher on the outfielders and even the infielders than anybody. It was blowing pretty good.”
Maddux gave up three homers in six innings, failing for the third time to get his first win with the Cubs since 1992.
Sosa homered twice and passed Ernie Banks for the Cub record, but also lost a fly ball in the sun in the 10th that sparked the winning rally.
Maddux took an 0-2 record into the game and emerged with a no-decision after giving up eight hits and seven runs. His ERA is 8.62.
“It’s one of those things where I don’t think I’m pitching as bad as it looks and I don’t think sometimes I’ve pitched as good as it looks too,” Maddux said.
Sosa’s solo shot in the first pushed him past Banks as the Cubs’ career leader with 513 homers. Sosa homered again in the third. He has 543 career homers and 64 multihomer games.
Houston 6, Milwaukee 1 -- Roger Clemens has won all three of his starts this season, and he looked as dominant as ever at Houston.
“The Rocket” even added the second RBI of his career, driving in Brad Ausmus with a single to right field. Clemens’ other RBI came June 20, 2002, against Colorado when he was with the New York Yankees.
Clemens (3-0) struck out seven in seven innings, giving up only one run and four hits to lead the Astros to their seventh win in eight games.
Milwaukee’s Brady Clark ended Clemens’ scoreless streak at 17 innings, knocking in Scott Podsednik with a single in the fourth.
San Diego 6, Arizona 5 -- Ryan Klesko hit a three-run homer off Matt Mantei in the ninth inning to lift the Padres at San Diego.
Mantei (0-2) relieved to start the inning with a 5-3 lead, faced four batters and didn’t get any out.
Mark Loretta led off with his third single of the game, Brian Giles walked, and Phil Nevin hit a run-scoring single. Klesko followed with his first homer of the season.
San Diego finished 5-4 in its first homestand at Petco Park.
Atlanta 3, Florida 2 -- Andruw Jones scored all the way from first in the 10th inning when Miguel Cabrera lost a fly ball in the sun, and the Braves completed a sweep of the Marlins at Atlanta.
Brave left fielder Chipper Jones re-injured his right hamstring in the sixth inning while trying to chase down Luis Castillo’s long drive to left-center.
Two teammates helped Jones to a cart, which took him to the clubhouse.
Pittsburgh 8, New York 1 -- Craig Wilson drove in two runs with a homer and a single, and the Pirates completed their first three-game sweep at Shea Stadium in a decade.
Philadelphia 5, Montreal 4 -- Doug Glanville homered leading off the ninth inning at Philadelphia. Glanville’s homer gave the Phillies their fourth consecutive win in their new ballpark after a loss in the opener.
Montreal (2-10) lost its seventh in a row, its longest skid in more than three years.
Colorado 8, St. Louis 5 -- Todd Helton homered for the third game in a row, and Jason Jennings got the win at St. Louis.
