U.S. Grandfather Swims 35 Miles to Benefit Reefs
From Times Wire Reports
A 61-year-old Texan needed about 16 hours to swim the rough Caribbean waters between Cozumel Island and Cancun, a journey meant to promote the protection of coral reefs.
Paul Ellis, a grandfather from Austin, began the 35-mile swim shortly after midnight, crossing to the mainland and then swimming north along the coastline.
Ellis attempted the same swim two years ago but was forced to abandon the ocean 11 hours into the attempt because of choppy conditions.
