Driver Who Hit Cyclists Is Sought
The California Highway Patrol continued its search Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who killed one cyclist and injured another on Telegraph Road near Ventura.
Darlene Bryant, 55, of Ventura died at Ventura County Medical Center on Wednesday after being hit from behind by a driver who fled.
Investigators later found the driver’s dark green Honda sedan abandoned in a nearby orchard. Officials did not disclose the identity of the owner.
Bryant and Lennis Dearing, 68, also of Ventura, were riding on the right shoulder of eastbound Telegraph at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday when they were hit, authorities said.
Dearing was treated for minor injuries at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.
After hitting the women, the driver fled east on Telegraph and remained at large Thursday.
A witness traveling in the westbound lanes at the time of the accident told investigators he saw a dark green Honda sedan with a damaged windshield turn off Telegraph onto Briggs Road.
CHP investigators said they found evidence at the scene indicating the Honda had hit the women.
