Environmental Protest Shuts City Block
A city block in downtown Eureka was shut down for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon after scores of forest activists spilled onto city streets.
The protesters, who included activists from Earth First and Mattole Forest Defenders, had initially planned to stage a protest over logging in the region in front of the Humboldt County courthouse. But the protest moved onto Eureka’s 5th Street when the protesters spotted several logging trucks on their way up the street.
Activists stood in the path of the trucks, forcing them to stop. One activist climbed atop one of the trucks, waving a Defend the Forest sign and drawing cheers of encouragement from others.
