Go Google yourself
I empathize with Geoff Boucher in describing dangers of learning the virtues of his doppelganger during Google searches (“Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me -- Hey, Who’s He?,” Aug. 12). For years, all I had to contend with was an occasional misdirected piece of junk mail for a Sherman Oaks attorney with my name, but lately things took a fateful turn.
A couple of years ago, a Jonathan Demme film, “The Truth About Charlie,” co-written by Steve Schmidt, earned me a few errant voicemail accolades, until the movie tanked. Then, a few months ago, a voice piped up in defense of George Bush -- his campaign spokesman, Steve Schmidt.
For all who are planning vitriolic missives, please check the ZIP code first. I’m in Los Angeles.

I enjoyed Geoff Boucher’s article on the ego Google. He found one other Googleganger. I have hundreds of them. One of them even has a card at my library. The good news is that I am the first on Google. The bad news is that all the other Alan Cooks appear to be writers and, like Boucher’s, smarter than I am, judging from their books.

What a funny, well-written piece! I did the same thing a couple months ago and found my own Googleganger. When I e-mailed him, I told him that it felt as though I’d looked in a mirror and seen someone else’s face!
