Stanford Remains Perfect

Somehow, Josh Childress ended up in the arms of his fellow students in the front row of their rowdy rooting section.

Stanford’s star forward made sure the top-ranked Cardinal ushered out an era at Maples Pavilion in perfect fashion.

He had 29 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks, and Stanford won its school-record 25th consecutive game, a 76-55 victory Saturday over Oregon.

The Cardinal (25-0, 16-0) remained one of two unbeaten teams in Division I. No. 2 Saint Joseph’s is 26-0 after beating Rhode Island, 57-55, earlier Saturday.

Childress was 10 for 16 from the field, including four for six from three-point range in what some believe might have been his final home game before declaring himself available for the NBA draft.

And he was the first to lead a charge into the student section to celebrate the team’s fourth regular-season conference title in six seasons and a 14-0 record this season in Maples Pavilion, which will soon undergo major renovations.

“It was a spontaneous thing,” he said. “We have the best fans in the country. I’m the type of guy who likes to celebrate. But I know I have to stay focused, and we have to stay focused.”

Stanford beat the Ducks at home for the 18th consecutive time in a matchup that was nothing like their last meeting, when the Cardinal rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit to win, 83-80, in Eugene, Ore., on Jan. 31.

Luke Jackson scored 18 points and Aaron Brooks had 17 for the Ducks (12-11, 7-9), who had their entire roster available for only the fifth game all season. That’s in part because Brooks sat out six weeks because of a broken right wrist.

Stanford had another solid defensive game after holding Oregon State to a season-low 47 points Thursday night.

No. 17 Arizona 72, Washington State 60 -- Salim Stoudamire returned from a one-game suspension to score 21 points at Tucson -- 16 in the second half -- and the Wildcats ended a two-game losing streak by beating the Cougars for the 38th consecutive time.

Washington State (12-14, 6-10) last beat Arizona on Jan. 30, 1986, in Pullman, Wash.

Stoudamire, suspended by Coach Lute Olson for “failure to meet team responsibilities,” was eight for 16 from the field, including three for seven from three-point range, and held Washington State’s Marcus Moore to five points on two-for-11 shooting.

Moore, who scored 36 and 29 in his previous two games against Arizona, was frustrated enough to get into a few shoving matches with Stoudamire, and Cougar Coach Dick Bennett benched him for much of the second half.

Washington 96, Arizona State 72 -- Brandon Roy led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points, and four other players scored in double figures for the Huskies at Tempe, Ariz.

Nate Robinson had 13 points and Hakeem Rollins scored 12 off the bench for Washington (15-10, 10-6), which remained in second place in the conference, one game ahead of Arizona.

The Sun Devils (10-16, 4-13) were led by Ike Diogu, who scored a game-high 27 points and was 11 for 14 from the free-throw line. He set a Pacific 10 record for the most free throws made in a season with 240.

California 75, Oregon State 58 -- Leon Powe came off the bench for the first time this season and scored 23 points to help the Golden Bears (13-12, 9-7) rout the Beavers (11-15, 5-11) at Berkeley.

Powe and regular starting point guard Ayinde Ubaka did not play for the first 7 1/2 minutes, as Coach Ben Braun opened the final home game of the season with seniors Gabriel Hughes and A.J. Diggs.
