A North-South Railway
The excellent report by Dan Weikel (July 5) revealed the growing inadequacy of Interstate 5, the principal north-south route between Mexico and Canada. Indeed all the demographic projections indicate that no matter how much money is poured into widening and improving this key transportation artery, it will not be able to keep up with the growth of the population and projected traffic.
Why can’t our officials think outside the box, and instead of pouring billions of dollars into this project create a decent north-south rail system? The advantages would be obvious not only for daily commuters but also for shippers of goods.
