Release of Tanker Deal Documents Is Expected
The White House has agreed to begin releasing documents related to a stalled $23.5-billion Air Force plan to lease and buy 100 Boeing Co. 767 tankers, a full year after an initial request from Congress, congressional and defense sources said.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who led congressional scrutiny of the deal, has blocked Senate approval of all civilian nominees for Pentagon jobs until the documents have been turned over.
Congressional sources and a defense official said White House Chief Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales agreed at a meeting with McCain and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John W. Warner (R-Va.) last week to release the documents.
