Frolov Signs Backup Deal in Moscow

Left wing Alexander Frolov, the leading goal-scorer for the Kings last season, has signed a contract with a Russian hockey team as a backup plan in case of an NHL owners’ lockout.

Frolov, 22, who lives in Moscow during the off-season, had 24 goals and 24 assists for the Kings last season. His contract with CSKA Moscow allows him to play in the NHL when the season begins.

“We hope the league’s starting on time and he’s playing for the Kings, but we understand that a lot of players are signing deals in Europe as a fallback given the uncertainty,” said Kevin Gilmore, King assistant general manager.

Several players plan to play in Europe next season if there is a lockout.

Boston Bruin center Joe Thornton has signed with a Swiss team and Florida Panther goalie Roberto Luongo said he also might sign with a Swiss team.

The Kings signed restricted free agent Joe Corvo to a one-year, $800,000 contract and avoided arbitration with the offense-minded defenseman. Corvo, 27, had eight goals and 17 assists and made $475,000 with the Kings last season.
