The Money Is There

Recent back-to-back Times editorials (“Last Chance to Be a Hero,” July 19; “Governor Girlie Man,” July 20) criticize California residents for their unwillingness to pay for good roads, clean water and superior schools. Whereas some of what is said may be true, upon deeper analysis there may be legitimate reasons as to why. For example, there have been a number of propositions dealing with improving our roads that we have approved only to have politicians from both parties siphon those funds off for their pet projects or other unrelated programs. The question is not whether this money is needed, but rather accountability. Contrary to your criticism, most residents of California understand the needs of the state and the difficulties associated with budgets and expenditures.
