Sept. 11 Victims Fund to Pay Out $6.9 Billion

The fund set up to compensate Sept. 11 victims will end up paying about $6.9 billion to more than 5,500 people, officials said.
About 97% of the families of the nearly 3,000 people killed signed on with the fund, giving up the chance to sue airlines and security companies for alleged negligence. The average payment for a death claim is about $2.1 million.
