Senate OKs Ban on Islamic Head Scarves

The French Senate gave final legislative approval to a law banning Islamic head scarves in France’s public schools on a 276-20 vote, despite Muslim protests.
President Jacques Chirac has indicated his support for the measure. It forbids religious apparel. Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses also would be banned, but authorities have made it clear that the measure is aimed at Islamic head scarves.
