Frankel to Introduce a Couple of Imports
Bobby Frankel has a long history of success with European imports, and he will unveil two more horses making their first start in California on today’s card at Santa Anita.
In the fourth race, the Hall of Fame trainer will send out the German-bred Mandela. The 4-year-old, English-bred filly, Shoot, will make her first start since Aug. 15 in the seventh.
Owned by Gary Tanaka, Mandela, a 4-year-old daughter of Acatenango, has won twice in eight starts but did run third in the German Oaks, a Grade I, last spring and was also third in the Prix de Pomone, a Grade II, two months later in France. She will be making her first start on Lasix and will break from the rail under jockey Alex Solis. Six others are entered in the $56,000 optional claimer at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Race of the day: L’Oiseau d’Argent, who made a successful U.S. debut for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin on Jan. 16, will try for his second consecutive win at Gulfstream Park in today’s sixth, a $38,000 allowance at about 1 1/16 miles on the turf. John Velazquez will ride the 5-year-old Silver Hawk gelding.

One for the road: Rosecoloredglasses ran well in his return to the grass for trainer Michael Caraman and a repeat would make him hard to handle in today’s eighth at the Fair Grounds. The 5-year-old Pistols And Roses gelding was flattered when Bebe Garcon, the horse who beat him by a half-length Feb. 9, returned to win. Rosecoloredglasses deserves the nod in the $32,500 allowance at about 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick all using Alpine Singer in the first, Wild Glory in the second, Crash McGoon in the third, Mandela in the fourth, Amber Twilight and Snoqualmie Ridge in the fifth, Highly Tempting and Midafternoon in the sixth, Shoot and Spirit Of Nature in the seventh and Betphone and Awesome Commander in the eighth.
