No. 1 feels like home for Jones
Norah Jones continues to be the darling of the pop world as her new album, “Feels Like Home,” tops the national sales chart for the third consecutive week.
Nielsen SoundScan, which monitors U.S. record sales, reported Wednesday that Jones’ album sold another 281,000 copies last week, bringing the CD’s three-week total to 1.7 million.
During a time of diminished commercial expectations in the music business, the results are little short of astounding, especially for a mainstream pop album in an era of R&B; and hip-hop sales domination.
Equally remarkable, Jones’ debut, “Come Away With Me,” is still at No. 26 after nearly two years on the charts. That CD has now sold nearly 8.2 million copies in the United States alone.
The two collections are marked by a wonderful musical restraint and taste, both in Jones’ vocals and in the arrangements.
Retailers expect Jones to again top next week’s chart. In fact, it may remain No. 1 until challenged by R&B; singer Usher’s new album, which will be released March 23.
Two hip-hop forces, Kanye West and Young Gunz, hold the No. 2 and 3 spots after selling 132,000 and 128,000 copies, respectively, last week.
