BUZZ CLUBS
The Whisky turns 40
The Whisky was the site of a rock ‘n’ roll love-in Friday as the venerable nightclub celebrated its big four-oh. Among the top dogs who came to pay their respects to Mario Maglieri, who has owned the Sunset Strip rock joint for all four decades, were Elton John and members of the Doors, AC/DC, Chicago, Social Distortion, Motorhead and Danzig. “I don’t feel any older,” says Maglieri, who also owns the Rainbow. “I’ll be here for another 40 years.” ... In more rock ‘n’ roll news, the Viper Room is under new management. Former Whisky talent buyer Mike Wilson is running the famed WeHo nightclub. Among Wilson’s resume highlights are bringing such acts as Korn, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stone Temple Pilots to the Whisky at the height of their fame.

Kid space on Sunset
Teeny-boppers everywhere are counting the days till the launch of Ruby Tuesdays, a new youth-oriented promotion at the Key Club featuring top young rock acts. Scheduled to make its premiere on April 6, Ruby Tuesdays is the brainchild of Key Club creative director Joseph Brooks, who says it will be a 15-and-older club, with no cover charge. The first musical guests are Ashbury, the Adored and the Blood Arm.... In more Sunset Strip news, the premiere party for “The Mayor of Sunset Strip,” a film chronicling the life and rock ‘n’ times of famed DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, is set for March 22 at the Hyatt Hotel’s Sunset Ballroom (a.k.a. the Roof). And there’s also a pre-party bash at Bang! March 20. The Britpop club will transform into Rodney’s English Disco for the night.... We hear the ‘80s-themed nightclub Beat It!, which takes place Sundays at the Ruby nightclub in Hollywood, plans to celebrate its fifth anniversary April 4. And get this: Beat It! promoter Jason Lavitt tells me he’s launching a new dance club at Blue in Hollywood called Club 1990’s; kickoff is set for April 2. The club will feature ‘90s pop and alternative sounds from such bands as Madonna, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Beck, Nirvana and RuPaul. Woo-hoo! Sounds like a party.

Birthdays at M.J.’s
Club promoters Frank Rodriguez and Vag Davis (Bricktops/Sucker) celebrated their birthdays last Thursday at the newly minted nightclub M.J.’s, a gay dance club in Silver Lake at the former location of Woody’s.... L.A.’s trendy hair salon, Prive, continues to be rock star central. Not only did we bump into extreme-tanner Nicky Hilton, but the extremely tatted Prive receptionist Lance Bulen slipped me a copy of his latest project, “Kingbaby.” The CD is chock full of Southern fried rock and soul. The best part, though, is Prive’s boutique (nothing like shopping while processing). I got lucky and snagged a silver necklace with a brass knuckles pendant. Jump back!
