To Stick to a Budget, You Cut Your Spending
I found the headline “Every Million Counts” (editorial, March 1) refreshing. Officials never say they need additional money for more pork; they come out with their long faces on and threaten us with dilapidated schools, hospital closures or interruption of police protection. It’s about time we looked into cutting the spending instead of raising taxes.
If some analysts can come in and reduce the budget by a million dollars a whack, then let them have at it. I’m glad that the Assembly Budget Committee will be looking into how the state buys things. I am compelled to shop around for the best deal on major purchases, and I certainly don’t get everything I want every time I go to the store. The state should operate the same way.
