Camry, Windstar Face U.S. Safety Probes
Toyota Motor Corp. faces a U.S. safety investigation and potential recall of more than 1 million of its bestselling Camry cars and Lexus ES 300 sedans because of reports of unexpected acceleration that caused 30 crashes.
The action involves 2002 and 2003 Camry, Camry Solara and ES 300 cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The agency also began an inquiry into 56 reports that power sliding doors on 761,000 of Ford Motor Co.’s 1999 to 2002 Windstar minivans may open when the vehicles are moving.
Both actions are preliminary evaluations, which the Washington-based agency either closes without further investigation or upgrades to an engineering analysis. The initial investigations are upgraded in 26% of cases, and about seven of 10 that reach the second step result in a recall.
