Don’t Begrudge the ‘Green Zone’ Respite

The tone of the writing in “Green Zone Colors View of Occupation” (March 21) seems to resent the “secure bubble” in which the endangered U.S. soldiers enjoy their “surreal sense of calm” and their chow. “Think chipped beef on toast.”

To begin with, chipped beef on toast, which is known by those of us who served in the military, is no luxury food. And this “secure bubble” is only temporary, as these troops know that they can be sent home in body bags at any time. Would the writer prefer that they live in mud huts and have no breaks from their massively dangerous duty hours? Has the writer served in the military? ... Has he been in a battle zone?
