Web Users Choose Name for Zoo’s Orangutan
SAN DIEGO
A newborn Sumatran orangutan at the San Diego Zoo was named Wednesday, thanks to more than 180,000 America Online members who participated in an Internet poll.
The 2 1/2-week-old orangutan will be called Cinta, which means “love and affection” in Bahasa, the language of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The name Cinta got 39% of the vote, which began March 9, followed by Suka, with 22%, meaning “to be fond of”; Merdeka, with 21%, meaning “independent” and “free”; Gembria, with 14%, meaning “glad” and “cheerful”; and Pasti, with 4%, meaning “certain” or “definite.”
