Man to Be Tried in Death of Acquaintance in ’93
VENTURA
Following a brief preliminary hearing, a judge Thursday ordered a Ventura man to stand trial on murder charges in the strangling death of an acquaintance a decade ago.
Warren Patrick Mackey, 39, has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed Norma Rodriguez, 32, at her Port Hueneme duplex in June 1993. He was arrested last August after police said they linked him to the crime with DNA evidence.
Mackey worked with Rodriguez at an Oxnard Kmart store and was described by authorities as a friend of the victim. Rodriguez was the mother of two boys.
Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward F. Brodie heard from several prosecution witnesses before ruling, a prosecutor said. Arraignment is scheduled for April 22. Mackey is jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.
