Kings Had a Terrible Quarter Report
The Lakers outscored the Sacramento Kings, 25-1, to take a 33-14 lead at the end of the first quarter Wednesday night.
But that’s not as impressive as the first quarter the Lakers had against the Kings on Feb. 4, 1987, at the Forum, when they led, 40-4.
The score was 29-0 before the Kings’ Derek Smith made two free throws. The Kings did not make a field goal in the quarter, missing 18 shots.
The four first-quarter points were the fewest since the introduction of the 24-second shot clock in 1954.
“It’s a good thing we’re a good free-throw shooting team,” King Coach Phil Johnson said after the game, which the Lakers won, 128-92.
Wrote Laker beat writer Gordon Edes in The Times: “If this had been on the playground, Shirts vs. Skins, they would have picked new teams after the first four minutes.”

Trivia time: The record for fewest first-quarter points is now three, set by the Denver Nuggets at San Antonio in 2002. What is the record for any quarter?

Que dice? Dan Patrick and Rob Dibble, on ESPN Radio, were talking about former Seattle Mariner closer Kaz Sasaki, who reportedly was unhappy with the way he was being treated by the Mariners and went back to Japan.
“He got fed up and told the Mariners, ‘No mas,’ ” Dibble said. Said Patrick: “Are you sure he said, ‘No mas?’ ”

Surprise answer: Carson Palmer, a guest on Patrick’s radio show, was asked whether he was ready to be the Cincinnati Bengals’ starting quarterback.
Palmer said, “No.”
But he then went on the explain that after watching film and preparing, he’d be ready by opening day.

Lovable loser: As Rob Fukuzaki reported on Channel 7 this week, Haruurara, the winless but immensely popular Japanese racehorse, extended her losing streak to 106 by finishing 10th in an 11-horse field at a racetrack in Kochi, Japan.
Haruurara, which translates to “glorious spring,” has been losing consistently since 1998. The 8-year-old chestnut mare has only four second-place finishes and has earned a paltry $9,300.
Haruurara is adored in Japan for never giving up.
“It’s better if she loses,” said one fan, who bet $9.30 on her. “If she won, it wouldn’t be so interesting anymore.”

Looking back: On this date in 1973, junior Bill Walton had one of the all-time great performances in leading UCLA to an 87-66 victory over Memphis State as the Bruins won their seventh consecutive NCAA championship. Walton, making 21 of 22 shots, scored 44 points.

Trivia answer: Two, by the Dallas Mavericks in the third quarter of an 87-80 loss to the Lakers at the Forum in 1997.

And finally: Former Denver Bronco running back Clinton Portis has signed an eight-year, $50.5-million contract with the Washington Redskins. According to ESPN the Magazine, Portis has had T-shirts printed that feature his picture above the Capitol with this slogan: “Clinton: Eight More Years.”
