Voters Can’t Impose Term Limits, Justices Say

Voters do not have the right to impose term limits on state legislators through a ballot initiative, the state Supreme Court ruled. In a 5-0 decision, the justices said the only legal way to limit elected officials’ terms is through a constitutional amendment.
The 1992 law held House and Senate members to 12 years. It was challenged by some of the lawmakers subject to limits this year. Tuesday’s ruling means they can seek reelection.
