Mileage Tax? They Flat-Out Disagree
Re “Down the Road to a Driving Tax,” Commentary, Nov. 18: Maybe this is too simple: Tax the tires federally and apportion the revenue to the states accordingly.
The materials are easier to monitor, and the tax can be added as a cost to new car purchases, tire manufacturers and retailers. The roads need to be maintained, but not at the expense of fuel tax revenues.
California is on the right path in bringing down fuel emissions. Other states should follow suit.

Just when my wife and I were poised to junk the old gas-guzzler for a new high-mileage hybrid, to protect both the environment and our bank account, the new DMV director has proposed taxing mileage instead of fuel (Nov. 16). We have saved $25,000. No wonder the DMV is so respected.
